How to Bet on NFL at FanDuel Sportsbook

At FanDuel, you can bet on NFL in ways that suit your strategy and level of experience. Here’s a clear beginner-to-intermediate guide on how to bet on the NFL, covering the core bet types and how to wager on the NFL at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Understanding the Main Types of NFL Bets

We offer a number of different betting markets for fans to pick from. Here are the most popular NFL bet types we offer:

  • NFL Spreads: The point spreads tries to level the playing field for both team's odds to win. A typical line might be: Chiefs -6.5 (+105) vs. Steelers +6.5 (-125). If you bet the Chiefs, they must win by 7+ points. If you back the Steelers, they can lose by 6 points—or win outright—and your bet cashes.

  • NFL Moneylines: These are the simplest form of NFL odds: pick the team you think will win outright. Favorites are denoted with a minus (-) and underdogs with a plus (+). For example: Lions -180 means you must wager $180 to win $100. Likewise, Bears +130 means a $100 bet returns $130 profit if they win.

  • NFL Totals (Over/Under): Bet on the total number of combined points in the game. If the Over/Under is set at 37.5: a 21-17 final score (38 combined points) hits the Over, while a 24-13 score (37 combined points) hits the Under.

  • Live NFL Odds (In-Game Betting): Watch and wager in real-time. Our in-play betting markets update between possessions and even between snaps. Bet on evolving outcomes like spreads, moneylines, totals, and player props as the game unfolds.

  • NFL Player Prop Bets: Target individual player stats such as passing yards for a QB, Anytime Touchdowns, rushing yards, total receptions, or interceptions. These markets are powered by official NFL data and constantly adjusted by FanDuel’s risk team to reflect real-world trends and injury status.

  • Parlays and Same Game Parlays: Combine multiple bets into a single wager for a bigger potential payout. Build your own Same Game Parlay for any NFL matchup by mixing player props, team totals, and game lines.

  • NFL Futures: Futures markets let you bet on long-term outcomes for the NFL regular season and playoffs. These include wagers such as the NFL Super Bowl winner, teams to win division titles, and which player will be crowned the NFL MVP.

How to Read NFL Odds

NFL odds at FanDuel Sportsbook use the American odds format, shown as either positive (+) or negative (−) numbers:

  • +200: Wager $100 to win $200 (underdog).
  • -150: Wager $150 to win $100 (favorite).

Example: If you bet $100 on the Detroit Lions +200, you’d receive $300 total if they win: $200 in profit plus your $100 stake. Betting Philadelphia Eagles at −150 requires risking $150 to profit $100. FanDuel’s bet slip automatically calculates your payout, helping you make informed, fast decisions.

NFL Odds and Betting FAQs

  • Do overtime periods count for my NFL spread, moneyline, and totals wagers?

Yes. FanDuel grades almost every NFL game market—including full-game spreads, moneylines, and over/unders—on the final official score after all overtime periods are completed, unless the market header specifically says otherwise.

  • What happens if an NFL game ends in a tie?

If the final score is tied after overtime, moneyline wagers are void and stakes are refunded, while point-spread and totals bets are settled on the posted numbers (so a spread that lands exactly on the closing line is graded as a push).

  • What happens if an NFL game is postponed or moved to a different stadium?

When a game is postponed before kickoff, all wagers are void. If it’s relocated but still played on the scheduled date—whether to a neutral site or the opponent’s stadium—bets remain live because FanDuel grades action on the official league box score, not the venue.

  • How does FanDuel treat a Same Game Parlay if one NFL leg is void (for example, because the game ended in a tie)?

If a leg is voided, the parlay is re-priced to the odds of the remaining legs and still stands. Only when every leg in the SGP is void does FanDuel return the entire stake.
